Software Engineer II · Atlassian · Austin. Not a promotion packet. A mid-year conversation his director could cite.
July 2025
Kenji Watanabe has been at Atlassian in Austin since 2023. Reliability on a large Jira-adjacent service. Last year’s skip-level with his director lasted twenty-two minutes. He said things like “a lot of firefighting” and “the migration is going well.” She nodded. Mid-year came back meets expectations. He was not surprised. He was empty-handed.
He did not want a Staff packet. He wanted the next skip-level to use facts he would otherwise lose by June.
The habit
After a migration milestone in February he logged what changed, which teams, and the incident-minute drop he had in Slack. Fifty seconds. No formatting.
He did that fourteen times through June. On-call load, a flaky test suite, a customer-facing timeout. None of it would have survived until December in his head.
The room
July 2: forty minutes polishing Q2 into a one-pager. Not a career manifesto. He sent it the day before the skip-level with “use or ignore.”
July 8: she used the migration cut. He did not have to reconstruct it live. Mid-year letter said exceeds. Same title. The paper trail was the difference from 2025.
“Last skip-level I performed competence. This one I handed her March.”
Kenji did not need a new level in July. He needed a director who could cite work from March without him fishing for it in the chair.
